Oh, well, at least it makes sense, as only yesterday I was explaining to Deidre why I think Snape isn't actually all that bad, and kind of amuses me. And, okay, fine, I did actually say I kind of liked him. Not in a "Gee, I hope I marry someone just as evil and greasy as him" way but in a "He would amuse me if he were a real person" way. She then made a face like, "You poor thing, you've obviously snapped under the pressure of school." etc. Granted, she's been making that face a lot lately considering I've been knocking things over in my tiredness and lack of coordination. Yesterday I was helping her move her CD rack into the office and I literally had knocked over half of them off into the floor within about two seconds. And she's got over 200 of them. I have skills. Plus, I'm getting sick. Yay.

Just as an aside, ignoring that it's Snape, the description sounds like someone I know... :)

Clean Energy at TTU

The Clean Energy bill passed! I hoped it would but I was worried that enough people wouldn't even vote. We needed 1,000 people to vote (only 1/10 of the student body) for it to count at all and it was on the Homecoming ballot, and only ~500 people usually vote at all. But almost 3000 people voted! I am so proud. It takes so much effort to get people to care at all, most people here give the impression that they don't care if their brains are rotting out their ears so long as no one bothers them and no one makes them pay anything or "degrades the religious tenors of our nation that make up the fabric of our community" blah blah blah "we love Bush" blah blah blah "kill the militant homosexuals" blah blah blah.

Here are the vote summaries:

"I do support Clean Energy at TTU, which would increase fees $8 per semester, benefiting my health. This would permit TTU to use Green Power."
Total votes: 2528

"I don't support Green Energy at TTU"
Total Votes: 326

Total Write-in: 7
(these were all in support of Green Power except for 1, which was an irrelevant comment about living in crappy dorms)

If we include the 6 write-in votes for YES plus 2528, we get a grand total of 88.57% of voters who voted YES for Green Power at Tech.

Poor widdle freshman, thinking someone will do something about the crappy dorms...

And Deidre had a teacher give the class an essay he wrote about his distopian world in which Muslims, abortionists, and militant homosexuals had taken over the world and were persecuting Christians. Deidre knows lots of homosexuals, none of which could be described as militant. Prissy, maybe, but not militant. Oh well. On to Environmental Chemistry.

Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki (of Spirited Away, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds, and Princess Mononoke fame) is releasing a new movie, Howl's Moving Castle. I fully credit Matt with getting me interested in them at all, but they're incredible movies/works of art. The interview he gave was pretty amusing:

http://film.guardian.co.uk/interview/interviewpages/0,6737,1569689,00.html

My favorite quote from when he was speaking about his deal with Disney:

"The Disney deal suits him, he explains, because he has stuck to his guns. His refusal to grant merchandising rights means that there is no chance of any Nausicaa happy meals or Spirited Away video games. Furthermore, Disney wields no creative control. There is a rumour that when Harvey Weinstein was charged with handling the US release of Princess Mononoke, Miyazaki sent him a samurai sword in the post. Attached to the blade was a stark message: "No cuts.""

Nice. That sounds like something you would do, Matt. :)

I have Internet again! Apparently Charter has had a lot of trouble with their exceedingly old and crappy modems, so the guy (who Deidre assures me was very hot) got us a brand spankin' new one and it seems to work a lot better. We shall see, I suppose, the other worked for the first day too.

Woo hoo! I finally have internet again, after a few weeks of bothering Charter. Apparently we have a cut in our line in the wall of our apartment, which is why the internet was not working. The very nice guy who came to fix it scared us for a second by telling us he would have to knock out the wall but then started laughing at our scared faces and said he would just have to switch out the modems. So I figured I might actually start writing in this in case anyone cares. :) Anyway, back to homework.
